April 2023 Monthly Meeting
April 4, 2023 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm CDT
“Dechados”: Mexican Samplers Across Time and Space
In April Lynne Anderson, Director of the Sampler Archive Project, will give a lecture titled “Dechados”: Mexican Samplers Across Time and Space.
Lynne Anderson will discuss the richly embroidered “dechados” made by girls and young women in Mexico and the evolving role of needlework in early female education. She will highlight motifs unique to Mexican samplers, the sequence of needlework lessons that led to Mexico’s most distinctive schoolgirl embroideries, and the impact of Mexico’s changing social, political, religious, and educational contexts. Embedded in her presentation are the stories of specific Mexican girls who proudly claimed ownership of their work, leaving stitched signatures that reveal identity, geographic location, and even socio-economic status.
At the monthly meeting we will have a brief business meeting with updates on programs, workshops, etc. After the business meeting we will have show & tell where members can share their finished projects with the group.
Our meeting will be virtual and the link will be sent out on Sunday before the meeting.
We welcome guests if you want to give us a try before joining.
